The Police Constable Degree Apprenticeship (PCDA) is a fantastic opportunity for people from all backgrounds to earn a degree while working as a police officer and receiving a full salary. Delivered in partnership with De Montfort University, the programme combines classroom learning, hands-on experience, and expert tutorship.
You’ll split your time between De Montfort University and our headquarters in Enderby, and as a full-time student, you'll also enjoy student benefits. The three-year Police Constable Degree Apprenticeship (PCDA) will take you from academic level 4 to a degree-level qualification (level 6), while developing you into a highly skilled police constable ready to meet the growing demands of the job.
From day one, you’ll be employed as a police officer, balancing your training and academic work throughout the programme. You’ll complete assessments, exams, and real-world policing duties, just like a regular officer.
You’ll train at both our headquarters in Enderby and at De Montfort University. In your second year, you’ll rotate through key departments, and by the third year, you’ll explore specialisms. The best part? You won’t have to pay for your degree, though you’ll remain on probation for the full three years.
Training for this role is set to start in September 2025 and will last for 30 weeks. During this time, all leave must be pre-booked, and we won’t be able to accommodate any prior holidays or commitments.
There are limited places available for this cohort, and we’ll be selecting candidates based on the highest scores.
Age
You must be 17 or older when applying. If you’re 17, you can progress through the recruitment process but can’t start until you turn 18.
Nationality and residency
Applicants must be a UK citizen, EU citizen with Settled or Pre-Settled status, Commonwealth citizen, or Foreign National with no restrictions on stay. You should have lived in the UK for the last 3 years.
Education
You’ll need Level 2 GCSEs in Maths and English. 2 A levels (grade A-E) or an equivalent Level 3 qualification or be in your last year of study.
Driving licence
A full UK driving licence isn’t required at application but must be obtained 6 months from your start date.
Fitness
You’ll need to pass a Job-Related Fitness Test (JRFT), which includes a running test (bleep test) to level 5:4. You’ll get two attempts to pass.
Policing experience
If you're a serving PCSO, Special Constable, or ISA, you can apply if you meet the necessary experience and training requirements.
Health assessment
You’ll complete a confidential medical questionnaire, and depending on your history, we may contact your GP. Conditions like epilepsy are considered on a case-by-case basis.
Background checks
You must declare any spent or unspent convictions and undergo a basic background check. Be honest – any undisclosed offences could impact your application.

The following criteria may prevent you from applying, so please be open and honest throughout the recruitment process. Be sure to check all criteria before applying!
Higher education
You can't apply if you hold or are about to receive a Level 6 qualification
Police experience
If you have previously been a police officer
Pending or existing convictions
Are awaiting to appear in court or have any serious convictions or recent cautions, bind-overs or findings of guilt
A previous unsuccessful application
If you have had an application turned down by a police force in the last three months at any part of the national process
Membership of some organisations
If you have been or are a member of a group or extreme political organisation such as BNP, National Front or Combat 18 that stirs up racial hatred and violence, a proscribed terrorist organisation, group or a similar organisation
Substance misuse
This includes the misuse of drugs, solvents and anabolic steroids. However each case is considered upon its own merits
Offensive tattoos
If you have tattoos on your face, neck or hands which could cause offence. However the nature, location, size, prominence and appearance of tattoos will be considered
Financial checks
If you have any current County Court Judgements (CCJ) against you or be the subject of an Individual Voluntary Agreement (IVA). If you have been registered bankrupt, you may only apply if it is at least three years since the date your debts were discharged
