Our Criminal Justice Department plays a vital role in holding offenders accountable and supporting victims, forming the backbone of the justice process. From detention to prosecution, the team ensures legal procedures are followed, strong case files are built, and public safety remains the top priority. The Criminal Justice Department is made up of specialist teams, all working together to support victims, bring offenders to justice, and keep people safe. Whether you're working with suspects, behind the scenes, or supporting victims through court, your role will have real impact. Here’s a quick look at our teams and what they do.
Custody Team
Responsible for the safe, lawful detention of arrested individuals. This is one of the most high-risk, closely scrutinised areas in policing. The team ensures every person in custody is treated with respect, dignity, and according to the law.
ID Unit
Carries out formal identification procedures for suspects, playing a key part in the investigation process.
Prosecutions Team
This team covers Crime and Traffic Proseutions and includes our in-house Police-led prosecutions group, who represent the force in court.
Case Preparation Team
Works closely with frontline officers to prepare case files, ensuring they meet national standards before being sent to the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS).
Out of Hours Case Prep
Available 24/7, 365 days a year to support with urgent case file submissions, especially for remand and charging advice from CPS.
Typing Team
Supports case preparation by transcribing suspect and victim interviews and providing other essential written documentation for case files.
Traffic Prosecution Team
Handles road traffic offences, from damage-only collisions to serious injury investigations. They review cases, investigate, and decide next steps.
Witness Care Unit (WCU)
witnesses from charge to court. They work under the Victims’ Code of Practice and Witness Charter, offering updates, needs assessments, referrals to support services, and help with court attendance.
Road Safety Unit (FHQ)
Part of the Leicester, Leicestershire & Rutland Road Safety Partnership, this team works to reduce road casualties through safety camera enforcement, education, and awareness campaigns.
Police National Computer (PNC) Team
Manages all records linked to arrests, warrants, court results, and more, keeping vital data accurate and up to date.
NICHE Team
Supports the wider force by managing intelligence checks, completing system reviews, and maintaining accurate records across Leicestershire Police systems.

Big changes are on the horizon, and you could be part of them. In 2026, Leicestershire Police will roll out the new national Digital Case File (DCF) system. It’s a huge step forward for policing across the UK, designed to transform how we manage case files and work with the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS).
The DCF will streamline the case-building process using smart digital tools, cutting down on paperwork and improving how officers and case builders prepare and share information. Everyone involved, from frontline officers to our Criminal Justice teams, will be trained to use the new system.
We’re also exploring ways to bring in new tech and automate key systems across the Criminal Justice Department. While we’re still in the early stages, this opens the door to all kinds of exciting projects across our teams, from Custody to Case Preparation.
