PSIs play a key role in solving serious and complex crimes, working across departments and tackling a range of cases, often all at once.
From the first piece of evidence to presenting a full case for court, you'll help deliver justice for victims and hold offenders to account. Our PSIs are embedded across the force, supporting specialist investigation teams wherever they’re needed most. No two days or cases are the same.
As a PSI, your day-to-day work really matters. You'll be right at the heart of investigations, helping to bring offenders to justice and make communities safer. Every case is different. Every day brings something new. Here's what you could get involved in:
Leading and supporting criminal investigations, making sure everything complies with legislation
Preparing and presenting case files for court
Working closely with partners and external agencies.
Spotting patterns and helping to improve how we investigate and respond.
Using your investigative mindset to gather, evaluate, and record key evidence, from witness statements to forensic material
From day one, you'll be supported by experienced mentors who will help build your knowledge of policing legislation, investigative procedure, and on-the-job best practice. You'll gain hands-on experience and develop a solid understanding of key legislation like the Police and Criminal Evidence Act 1984 and the Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act 2000. Essential tools for anyone working in investigations.
If you’re already working at PIP Level 2, this is your chance to take your skills to the next level. Whether you're aiming to step into a supervisory or management role, become a Senior Investigating Officer (SIO), or specialise in areas like child abuse investigation or digital media forensics, there’s plenty of room to grow. We’ll support you every step of the way with professional development, training opportunities, and a career pathway that works for you.
