Police Support Volunteers

Make a real difference in your community

What is a Police Support Volunteer?

Police Support Volunteers (PSVs) play a vital role in supporting Leicestershire Police and helping us provide top-notch service to the public. You can choose from a variety of roles, like volunteering with the neighbourhood investigation unit, helping protect homes as a home security volunteer, or even leading as a volunteer or cadet leader to develop your leadership skills.

You could also work on community projects, support crime victims, assist in preserving historical sites, or offer pastoral care as a police chaplain. Your time and skills are highly valued, and as a volunteer, you'll have the chance to grow personally and professionally, all while making a meaningful impact.

What does the role involve?

Volunteers are members of the community who, following training, make an invaluable contribution by giving up their time in a diverse range of roles alongside police officers and police staff. Our volunteer programme gives members of the public the opportunity to use their time and skills for the benefit of their communities and in a way that is interesting and enjoyable.

Where appropriate you'll be issued with a uniform and a Leicestershire Police identification badge, which will help the general public to recognise that you're a police support volunteer.

What we'll expect from you
You'll commit between two and four hours per week - averaged out over a 12 month period - to being a Police Support Volunteer. The hours you do will be negotiated between you and your main day-to-day contact.

Essential Training

Training is a vital part of our volunteer programme. All new volunteers must attend an induction event, where we outline key expectations and standards. To begin volunteering, you must complete essential training in Data Protection, Health and Safety, and Diversity (covering Equal Opportunities and Community & Race Relations). Additional training may include communication skills, conflict management, basic first aid, and using emergency and security equipment - equipping you with the confidence and knowledge to volunteer safely and effectively.
